Sun Country Aviation Security

Aviation Security
In the interest of public safety and a worry-free experience every time you fly Sun Country Airlines, we encourage you to familiarize yourself with this information.

Airport security
In an effort to maintain the highest possible standards in safety and security, Sun Country Airlines supports the recent changes in security at U.S. airports. Here are some of the things you can expect to experience. Be prepared to witness and encounter more visible and frequent security checks throughout the airport, including screenings of passengers, checked and carry-on baggage as well as searches of aircraft cargo, passenger compartments, and equipment. There is also likely to be an increased number of uniformed law enforcement in the airport areas. Just prior to boarding, you may have identification and boarding passes checked again. During flight, more TSA air marshals will be present. In addition, please be aware that many security procedures also take place behind the scenes.

Safety tips

  • Be aware of suspicious activity including people acting strangely or out-of-place items
  • Keep your carry-on bags, tickets and valuables with you at all times as they could be tampered with or stolen
  • Do not carry anything for another person, especially someone you do not know

Personal identification
Customers 18 years and older must show valid federal or state government issued photo identification, (valid driver's license, valid passport, or a valid military identification card) at the ticket counter and as they board the aircraft. Customers traveling internationally are highly encouraged to travel with a passport and may need to present a valid passport, visa, or any other required documentation depending on the destination. Passengers without proper identification will be denied boarding.

Accompanying guests
Only passengers needing special assistance, the elderly, or unaccompanied minors can be accompanied beyond the security checkpoint. See a Sun Country ticket counter agent for a gate pass.

Security checkpoints
All passengers must present proof of travel in order to pass through security checkpoints.

Ensure that you have

  • A paper ticket, boarding pass or one of the following documents:
    • Ticket receipt
    • Printed confirmation page or email
    • Travel agency itinerary confirmation
    • Faxed copy of an itinerary confirmation

Passengers without one of the above-listed forms of documentation will have to check in first at designated Sun Country ticket counters in the airport lobby.

Prohibited items
Due to increased security measures, many common items are on the TSA's list of prohibited items for carry-on and/or checked baggage. To ensure your safety and the convenience of your fellow travels, please be sure to leave these items at home.

If you bring a prohibited item to the checkpoint you may be criminally and/or civilly prosecuted or at the least asked to rid yourself of the item. A TSA screener and/or law enforcement officer make determinations depending on the item and the circumstances. Please understand, bringing a prohibited item to a security checkpoint - even accidentally - is illegal.

Recent changes
Effective August 4th, 2007, travelers are allowed to transport common lighters and breast milk thru the security checkpoint and onto their flight. Torch lighters will continue to be banned. Passengers can transport other liquids, gels, lotions or similar items thru the security checkpoint if the items are less then 3.4oz (100 ml) individually and they fit into a transparent 1 qt (1 liter) plastic bag. The contents must fit completely in the plastic bag and will be subjected to x-ray inspection separate from the passenger’s carry-on bag.

Passengers may also have the following items, but must declare them to TSA at the screening checkpoint if not contained in a clear or transparent resealable 1 quart (1 liter) plastic bag and/or are over 3.4oz. (100ml).

  • Baby formula/milk (to include breast milk), juice, and baby food in containers if a baby or small child is traveling
  • Medications (liquid, gel, and aerosol)
  • Liquids (to include juice) or gels for diabetic or other medical needs
You may be subjected to secondary screening if you enter the screening checkpoint with liquids, gels, and/or aerosols on their person or in their carry-on bag.

Also effective August 4, 2007, laptop computers, full-size video game consoles, full-size DVD players, CPAP breathing machines, and video cameras that use video cassettes must be removed from their carrying cases and submitted separately for x-ray screening. Laptop computers and video cameras that use cassettes have long been subject to this policy. Small and portable electronic items (like digital cameras) do not need to be removed from their carrying cases.

For a summary of these changes, visit the TSA web site.

Official list
Common sense is your best guide for what to leave behind when your travel by air. Weapons of any kind, as well as everyday objects that can obviously be used as weapons are inappropriate items in your carry-on and checked baggage. Please check official government lists before taking the word of friends, family members, or others whom you know and trust to insure you understand the most current restrictions.
